A Morehead City Tattoo Parlor May Be Shut Down by New Rules

Tattoo parlors abound in Carteret County, but not many people know of the one that’s right for them. That may be about to change. A few dozenĀ Morehead City tattoo shop residents, tattoo artists and business owners packed a council meeting Tuesday to speak out against proposed licensing requirements for tattoo and body piercing businesses. The requirements include a $1 million insurance policy, a requirement that piercings not be done on any part of the body except for the ear lobes, requiring that all employees pass background checks and keeping merchandise and activities from being visible from the outside of the shops. Mayor Jerry Jones acknowledged that some tattoo artists and piercing parlors are complaining but said he doesn’t think they want to be shut down.

Some of the speakers at the council meeting pointed out that the state health department already regulates tattoo and piercing businesses, and that Carteret County doesn’t have any ordinances that would require these businesses to carry liability insurance. Other speakers said the proposed requirements were an infringement on their rights and that they could be put out of business by regulations they couldn’t meet, such as having to block the view of their merchandise from the street.
